After the Green List was elected to the Student Parliament in April this year we already see now the results of a green addition to student democracy. Thursday November 5 th , we received approval for one of the most important measures UiO and SiO can do to reduce their carbon footprint quickly, namely a resolution of a meat-free day per week in the SiO canteens.

The decision is a strong signal from the Student Parliament that meat-free options are both important and necessary. It is a signal the Welfare Council (Velferdstinget) and SiO now should take seriously.

Meat-free food is in the wind. Vinmonopolet is this year giving wine tips for nut roast on pages about Christmas food in its customer magazine. Rema 1000 are actively promoting vegetarian food on their Facebook pages.

This is an important trend, for at the global level the meat industry is polluting so much that it is one of the largest contributions to the ongoing climate change. By choosing meat free food, you get a chance to eat healthy, inexpensive and environmentally friendly. This possibility is one SiO should provide for students.
