NEED A BREAK FROM THIS PLACE?: There are loads of things to do this week, in spite of social lockdown.

Culture Calendar 23rd - 29th November

Thanksgiving? Black Friday? Early Christmas? Late Deewali? This week can be called a transition festive week! The week of consumption, to put it harshly.

But let us start with usual reminders. CV, job application courses and language cafes are continuing on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday respectively.

Getting back to talking about festivities, believe it or not Christmas comes way early, topping Thanksgiving, in Norway. Thanksgiving is not celebrated heavily in Norway, but Black Friday surely is. Not just on Friday but throughout the week. As we now should avoid creating crowds, many stores have BlackWeek offers online. Checkout their website and consume wisely.

Many Christmas markets have already started in different corners of Oslo. Jul på Grunerløkka is happening on Saturday from 12 pm. Similarly, Norsk Folkemuseum's Christmas Fair is starting this weekend from Sunday to exhibit about Norwegian Christmas tradition amongst many other fulfilled activities. Markets at Youngstorget, Hadeland Glassverk and Nationaltheatret have already been attracting many people with talking elks and skate rink.

Let us switch to some paradoxically boring yet interesting events. Do you want to learn about history of different land in different perspective? Join online historical comic launch of ‘Uffo’ telling the story of resistance in Somaliland on 23rd November. Or learn about Building tax systems in fragile states on 26th November from 1 pm until 2 with leading governmental organizations of Norway. Or about Gender issues on 25th with SWEA.

Let’s go back to fun events. For the past few weeks Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra have been broadcasting different Beethoven shows online. Listen to them play Henry Purcell and Joseph Hayd this week on Thursday at 9 pm.

Movies are one of the best and fun ways to learn about different societies and cultures. Along that line, 30th Films from South Festival is kicking off digitally on 26th of November. You can enjoy several unique Asian, African, and Latin American movies while lying on your couch until 6th of December. Renting regulations vary according to different movies.
