International atudents elected new executive

The Oslo University branch of the International Students\' Union (ISU-Oslo) elected new office bearers October 02. Mr. James Jowi Otieno from Kenya was elected as the new President, while Ms. Daria Grichina from Russia is the Vice President. The entire executive committee comprises of Mr.Xu Bing from China (General Secretary), Ms. Janet Obiero from Kenya (Finance Secretary) and Mr.Efraim Dawids from Namibia (Social Affairs Secretary).

Other members are Mr. Newton Kyando from Tanzania (Academic Affairs and Sports) and Mr. William Tayeebwa from Uganda (ISU Newsletter Editor and Publicity Secretary). The elections were held in a cordial atmosphere in the Oslo University School of Education (Helge Engs Hus) conducted by Messrs Anders Worren and Eivind Vad Petersson, both officials from the Students\' Parliament. In their brief remarks, the election officials urged the executive committee to take their responsibilities seriously since they are responsible for the welfare of international students at the University of Oslo (UiO).

In his acceptance speech, Mr.Otieno, who has been heading the ISU-Oslo caretaker committee since June, told the general assembly that the ISU deals with social, cultural, academic and economic interests and needs of students.He said the ISU-Oslo branch works in cooperation with the Oslo University Students\' Parliament, the Norwegian Students\' Union and other students\' organisations with the aim of making the life of international students much easier while at UiO.

Meanwhile, the ISU National Coordinator, Mr.Paul Kainge has sent a congratulatory message to the new executive committee members thanking them for «sacrificing precious time to serve other International students...» The ISU-Oslo currently uses the Students\' Parliament as their office.
