Library Closes

The University Library (UB) closes today and will open on 1 October at the earliest. The reason is that four plaster plates have fallen from the ceilings, each weighing several kilos, the most recent ones on floors one and three. The Library is now working to find a solution to ensure that students can continue to borrow books despite the library\'s closure. Students are advised to resort to available desks in the Wilhelm Bjerke building, as well as the recently opened study rooms in Sophus Bugge and Eilert Sundt\'s building.

The University\'s computing centre has spent 2000 man hours (in addition to the time spent by IT-officers locally), costing NOK 2 million, on repairing damage following computer virus attacks, and preventing new attacks. The University was among those most badly affected by the Sobig-F virus on 19 August, as well as having been hit by the worms Blaster and Welchia in the recent past. «We had to re-install the entire operative system on 750 machines,» says Lars Oftedal, assistant IT manager at USIT, the University\'s Centre for Information Technology. In addition to 100 of the University\'s machines, about 350 of the computers linked to the student housing network were affected.
