Criticizing the Israeli Occupation
The University\'s rector Arild Underdal has written two formal letters to the Israeli embassy in which he criticizes Israel\'s acts of war on behalf of the University. One of the letters deals with the Israeli state\'s treatment of staff and students at Palestinian educational insitutions, while the other criticizes Israeli treatment of Palestinian health workers.
Kaare Norum, the University\'s former rector, has gone even further. He has initiated a call for signatures against the Israeli occupation. The petition has been signed by more than 200 academics in Norway and more than 100 academics abroad. The current rector has declined signing the petition.
Last week the University of Bergen promised to help Palestinian students who are afraid to return to Israel at the end of term. The University of Oslo is following suit, and will invite all Palestinian and Israeli students for discussions in order to clarify their financial and housing needs after the end of term.
