Culture Calendar 14th – 20th of September

We all need to keep up the 'dugnad-spirit', wash our hands and keep our social distance, but there are still plenty of options for socially distanced social experiences in Oslo this coming week. Take care of yourselves and each other and remember to RSVP and book tickets in advance.

You really miss going to the theatre. But you want to watch something with dancing and music involved – come to think of it, you really want to listen to Nina Simone, specifically. The performance I AM NINA by Nordic Black Theatre is just what you’re looking for. It’s about the life and music of the iconic artist, the performance is in English and it plays Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday this week.

Would you like to get up to date with promising new entrepreneurs and startups in Oslo and support a project working for more diversity in Norwegian business life? Then check out Charge Incubator 2020 Demo Day on Tuesday the 15th from 1 – 3:30 pm. Charge Incubator supports new businesses founded by first generation migrants, and will showcase 15 projects on their demo day. The event is free.

2020 has not been the best year for festivals to say the least. But if you’re into contemporary, experimental music, Ultima contemporary music festival is here to fill the festival-shaped hole in your soul. It runs from the 10th to the 19th of September and offers both concerts, exhibitions and installations. Ticket prices for concerts vary, but there are several free events and talks. We especially recommend adding your own wish to Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree Garden which will be placed outside of the new Deichmann Bjørvika library by the harbour.

If you have loads of mid-week energy to practice Norwegian and meet new people at the same time, the Deichmann library in Tøyen are hosting a language café Wednesday the 16th from 5 – 7 pm Tickets are free but must be collected from the library beforehand. This can be done from noon on the day of the event.

From Wednesday the 16th you can combine a walk in central Oslo with looking at art and learning about science. As part of Forskningsdagene, running from the 16th – 27th of September, there will be a photo exhibition at Rådhusplassen about the spectacular human brain.

Want to glitter up your Saturday night with fierce, fabulous Drag artists? Of course, you do. For the second time this autumn, Kulturhuset is hosting an Open Drag Stage Night Saturday 19th. The show runs twice, at 6:30 and 9 pm.

You can also spend the last day of the weekend at Kulturhuset, enjoying some beautiful art, craft and design and support local artists at Kunst & Designmarked Sunday the 20th from noon to 5 pm. Entry is free and all are welcome.
