46 percent of freshmen disappear

About half of the new students that began their studies at the University of Oslo in 1997 left within a year. That is among the findings in a new study published by NIFU, the Norwegian research institute for research and education. Most of the leavers quit studying altogether, but about 20 percent chose to transfer to another university or college. – This is far too many. The percentage that leave the University of Oslo is much higher than I imagined, rector Arild Underdal says. Anette Wilberg in the student\'s parliament thinks that the low faculty-to students-ratio and the low interest in lecturing among faculty might provide part of the explanation.
