Freedom of Research?

The University of Oslo may end its co-operation with the Ethiopian Addis Abeba University because the country\'s Marxist government is impeding free research at the university. -We cannot continue co-operation if this legitimates the government\'s policies, explains Niles Butenschøn, the director of SMR, the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights.

Several members of the management and most of the most renowned professors at the University of Addis Abeba have left the University since the government imposed strict ideological control of all research in December 2002. As a result, SMR, which has been the Addis Abeba Institute of Political Science\'s most important partner, is considering not renewing its five-year co-operation agreement when the current one expires this year.
