Professors Play Truant

In an attempt at improving the quality of teaching, the University of Oslo has made courses in pedagogics compulsory for all professors. However, most of the faculties fail to ensure that their staff complete these courses. Student representative in the Senate Kristian Jess points out that the recent appointment of Bjørn Andersson as Professor of Physics is a typical example of the low status attached to teaching. Although Andersson failed to complete the compulsory 50-lesson course in pedagogics in the course of five years\' tenure, his professorship was extended for a further two years.
