«Girl boom» at the Faculty of Law

The gender composition of students at the Faculty of Law at the University of Oslo has changed tremendously during the past 20-30 years. As of 1 September 2007, 61.2 per cent of the students were female and 38.2 per cent male. Out of the students who started this semester, approximately 70 per cent were women.

If this trend continues, the law society will become dominated by women. The statement is taken from an internal letter from Professor Mari Halvorsen, Head of the Equal Rights Committee at the Faculty of Law to Hans Petter Graver, Dean at the same faculty.

According to the letter, the reason for this change is that it is becoming increasingly hard to meet the entrance requirements at the Faculty of Law, and since the girls are continuing to outshine the boys in the upper secondary school, they are the ones who get in.
